Understanding Visit Types

APNS offers different visit options to help patients choose the type of care that best fits their medical concern, schedule, and level of need. Some patients already know what condition they have and simply need a refill or continuation of an established treatment plan. Others may need a short video discussion with a provider, while some concerns require a scheduled appointment with dedicated time for questions and review.

Choosing the correct visit type helps ensure your concern is reviewed appropriately and prevents delays in care.

Asynchronous Visit — $25

An Asynchronous Visit, also called an Async Visit, is a non-video, intake-based visit. This type of visit is appropriate for patients who generally know what their condition is, know what treatment they are requesting, and mainly need a medication refill, continuation of treatment, or straightforward care for an uncomplicated issue.

Async visits are completed through a condition-specific intake form. A provider reviews the information you submit and determines whether treatment can be safely provided without a video visit.

Best For

Async visits are best for:

  • Simple, uncomplicated concerns
  • Established conditions
  • Medication refills when appropriate
  • Patients who do not need a real-time conversation
  • Patients who already understand their condition and requested treatment

How It Works

After completing the appropriate intake form, your visit is placed in the provider queue. You may request a specific provider or choose the next available provider.

Async visits are usually addressed within 24 hours, although response times may vary depending on provider availability, patient volume, and the complexity of the request.

Important Limitation

An Async Visit may address one new or established uncomplicated issue based on the appropriate intake form. If the wrong intake form is completed, the visit may be cancelled, and you may be required to complete the correct intake before the provider can proceed.

Synchronous On-Demand Visit — $40

A Synchronous On-Demand Visit, also called a Sync On Demand Visit, is a short video-based visit designed for patients who need a brief real-time discussion with a provider.

This visit is intended to be a quick appointment, generally about 5 minutes, for patients who already have a good understanding of what is going on but need to ask a few quick questions, clarify treatment, or discuss a simple special request.

Best For

Sync On Demand visits are best for:

  • Quick medication questions
  • Simple treatment clarification
  • Requests for an alternative medication
  • Requests for a different medication form, such as liquid instead of a pill
  • Minor adjustments to an established plan
  • Simple concerns that require brief provider discussion

How It Works

After completing the appropriate intake, your visit is placed in the provider queue. You may request a specific provider or choose the next available provider.

Sync On Demand visits are usually addressed within 24 hours, depending on provider availability and patient volume.

Important Limitation

A Sync On Demand Visit may address one new or established uncomplicated issue based on the appropriate intake form. If the wrong intake form is completed, the visit may be cancelled, and you may be required to complete the correct intake before the provider can proceed.

Scheduled Synchronous Visit — $50

A Scheduled Synchronous Visit, also called a Scheduled Sync Visit, is a video-based appointment scheduled for a dedicated time with a provider. These visits are generally 15 minutes and are appropriate for patients who need more time than a quick on-demand visit allows.

This visit type is best when you have a new concern, several questions, or need a more complete discussion with your provider.

Best For

Scheduled Sync visits are best for:

  • New medical concerns
  • Concerns requiring a more detailed discussion
  • Patients with several questions
  • Follow-up care requiring provider conversation
  • Medication review
  • Review of labs or treatment response
  • Established stable issues requiring minor adjustments

How It Works

You will schedule a specific appointment time for a video visit with a provider. Because this visit includes dedicated provider time, it allows for a more structured conversation than an Async or Sync On Demand visit.

Important Limitation

A Scheduled Sync Visit may address one new or established uncomplicated issue based on the appropriate intake form.

If you have multiple established, stable, and uncomplicated issues that only require refills, lab review, or minor/no adjustments, up to three medical concerns may be addressed during one Scheduled Sync Visit.

Complex, new, urgent, or unrelated concerns may require separate visits.

Specialty Visits

Specialty visits are designed for focused care related to a specific specialty service or treatment program.

During a specialty visit, only the issue related to that specialty visit will be addressed. Unrelated concerns will not be evaluated during the specialty visit and may require a separate appointment.

For example, a specialty visit for weight loss, acne, men’s health, women’s health, long COVID, or another specialty service is limited to that specific area of care.

Visit Limits and Medical Concerns

To provide safe, focused, and appropriate medical care, APNS limits the number of concerns that may be addressed during each visit.

These limits are necessary because APNS visits are intentionally structured, time-limited appointments. Attempting to address multiple new, complex, or unrelated concerns in a short visit can compromise the quality and safety of care.

General Rule

Only one new medical concern may be addressed per visit.

Multiple new or complex concerns cannot be fully evaluated in a short telehealth visit and may require separate appointments, in-person evaluation, urgent care, emergency care, or specialist referral.

Established Stable Issues

If a patient has multiple established, stable, and uncomplicated medical issues, and only needs refills, lab review, or minor/no treatment adjustments, up to three established concerns may be addressed in one Scheduled Sync Visit.

This exception does not apply to multiple new, unstable, complex, urgent, or unrelated conditions.

Choosing the Right Visit

Choosing the correct visit type helps your provider review your concern efficiently and safely.

If you already know what you need and your concern is simple, an Async Visit may be appropriate. If you need a quick real-time conversation, a Sync On Demand Visit may be the best fit. If you have a new concern, multiple questions, or need dedicated time with your provider, a Scheduled Sync Visit is usually the better option.

If your concern is related to a specialty service, please choose the appropriate Specialty Visit so your care can be directed to the correct intake, provider, and treatment pathway.

Submitting the wrong intake or selecting the wrong visit type may result in cancellation of the visit and require completion of the correct intake or scheduling of the appropriate visit type.
